In 1994 the building was returned to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the branch of the NGA was given the building of Etchmiadzin Cinema situated just in front of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Khoren Der-Harootian was born in 1909 in Ashotavan village of Kharberd province, Western Armenia, into the family of a clergyman. He witnessed the tragic scenes of the Armenian Genocide. It deeply impressed the artist’s inner world, and was later reflected in his artworks. In 1921 together with his family, he settled in the USA, in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Khoren Der-Harootian mainly worked in the genres of painting and graphics, though the most productive and fruitful was sculpture, where he showed his great potential of a statuary.
The artist created in the period of various modern trends both in sculpture and in art generally. Certainly, his creations have some stylistic connections with modern sculpture, but the basis of his works make the artist’s specific and national spirit and thinking.
Khoren Der-Harootian died in 1991 in New York.
