“Yervand Kochar. Dialogue of Generations”

The National Gallery of Armenia and the Yervand Kochar Museum represent the exhibition “Yervand Kochar. Dialogue of Generations” ; painting, graphic art, sculpture and painting in space.

The exhibition will be open from 10 September to 10 October. It includes works created during two periods of Kochar’s activity (when he was in Paris and in Yerevan). The majority of works make those created in Yerevan. Many works created in Paris as well as the work “Family. Generations” (1925) are represented in the exhibition. The artist has made the traditional subject more profound thus highlighting the importance of the family. The latter is the point the power of which makes the sound succession of generations. This period includes also the works “Resurrection” (1923), “Vision. Jesus and Mary Magdalene” (1924) and many others.
In Paris Kochar became widely renowned for his works of “painting in space”. He tried to show paintings not only in space but also in time thus offering his own version of harmonious synthesis and juxtaposition of sculpture and painting.
Among paintings in space “Yerevan-Erebouni” (1968) is represented in this exhibition.
The illustrations for the Armenian epic work "David of Sassoun” are especially characteristic among the works painted in Yerevan (1936-1979). Created with true expression of attitude towards the heroism of the past they have become wonderful samples of Armenian painting. They are not only works of Armenian book illustration but also masterpieces of particular graphic value.
The exhibition also includes works dedicated to the renowned Armenians like Sayat-Nova, Komitas, Voskan Yerevantsi, Tigran the Great, Vardan Mamikonyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Avetik Isahakyan and Hovhannes Tumanyan.
