The year 2024 marks the 125th birth anniversary of Yervand Kochar (Ervand Kotchar, 1899–1979). The jubilee exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Armenia in cooperation with Yervand Kochar Museum and the artist's family comprehensively presents the master's creative path, including his paintings, graphic artworks, sculptures and Painting in Space works of different years.
The most important cities of Kochar's life – Tiflis, Paris, Yerevan make the basis of the exhibition. Separate halls display the multi-genre works of Tiflis period that represent the artist's first steps in art and summarize his professional growth and achievements. One of the halls featuring works of Paris period presents the master's canvases distinguished by the best traditions of the European avant-garde art, the other hall, an environment saturated with animation effects includes the works of Painting in Space, an art movement invented by Kochar, considered an unprecedented phenomenon in world art. The Yerevan period of the artist, a repatriate since 1936, is marked by his versatile activities, by the monumental sonority and epic spirit of new forms of plasticity in the fields of sculpture and graphics, by the author's invention of a new painting material – wax paint.
Works of Yervand Kochar are housed in the National Gallery of Armenia, Yervand Kochar Museum (Yerevan), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Galouste Gulbenkian Museum (Lisbon), the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow), the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg) and in private collections.
